Global Bach Community Internet Radio Station - 24/7 Bach - FAQ

What Is Internet Radio?

Internet Radio is a generic term for streaming music online. The primary difference between Internet radio and traditional mp3 music is that when playing an mp3 the music file itself is physically located on your PC. Internet radio however is continuously playing, or "streaming", from a server online. The listener tunes in with a player program such as iTunes, Winamp or Windows Media Player which receives the incoming audio data and plays it. Unlike traditional file downloading, the listener is typically not able to save or replay the content received on a stream after it has come through using the player software.

How Can I Listen?

The GBC radio station is accessed through its web address, or url, which is http://76.99.102.145:8000. Clicking this link, or typing it into a browser, will bring up a Shoutcast ID page with several options including a "Listen" link:

Clicking on "Listen" will bring up a box asking you to open the feed in your default media player or save it to disk - choose the "Open" option to listen. Depending on your setup, you may have to select a program - Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, and MusicMatch are the most popular of the many audio programs available.

Can I Use iTunes?

Yes. To listen to the feed using iTunes, click on "Advanced>Open Stream" and enter the url [http://76.99.102.145:8000]:

I Can’t Connect to the Feed – What is Wrong?

If you have a dial-up connection, your connection speed may be too slow to allow you to listen to the feed. Another possibility is that the maximum number of slots has been reached. If you experience repeated difficulty in connecting, please send us an email and let us know we need to expand the slot capability of our feed. This will come at some expense to the GBC, but we are prepared to provide that – please help us with a donation.

What Is Shoutcast?

The GBC radio station is set up using Shoutcast, a freeware audio streaming technology, developed by Nullsoft. Shoutcast uses mp3 encoding of audio content and HTTP as the transport protocol to broadcast Internet Radio.

What About Copyright Issues?

As with any music download, you should not capture or save anything for which you do not have a license. The broadcasters of any Internet Radio station are required to secure the legal right to broadcast the content they provide. However, that does not give the listener the right to capture and store it.

The recordings featured on the GBC’s internet radio feed are provided for personal use and may not be re-distributed or re-broadcast without prior written permission. This content is also available through podcast and direct download for personal use with the similar conditions.
